Student Stress

Student stress can have many different causes, from the pressure of schoolwork and classes, to dealing with issues as they grow, such as how to handle the opposite sex, facing bullies, and how to cope with peer pressure. Drugs may even be an issue in some schools, adding to a student’s potential stress level.

If you notice changes in your child, stress may be the cause of it in relation to one of the above stressors. Students with too much on their mind can have the same symptoms an adult might experience when it comes to stress. Headaches, feeling angry or irritable, problems sleeping, depression, anxiety, and even muscle pain. Students, unless in sports or enjoy exercising, may not exercise as much or at all, and can forgo healthy eating habits. If they do not eat healthy as it is, stress may only exacerbate the problem. Other students may become so stressed they do not eat at all, which can lead to unhealthy weight loss. Though young people have much less to worry about in terms of cardiovascular disease and stress, doing what you can to help dump that unnecessary stress now can keep them healthier in the long run and free from high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems.

Seeing the changes in your child, no matter what age he or she is, you can ask them about school, friends, exams, and other potential stressors. Avoid accusing them or anything, and be ready to listen. By making them comfortable and helping them through a tough time, you may be able to offer them stress relieving ideas or give them ways to manage time or deal with peer pressure. Children naturally function better with less student stress, so in order to make student life a good life, do what you can to offer support.
