Stress relief at work
Stress relief at work is possible. Being put into difficult situations that demand impossible objectives almost always lead to stress. Impossible deadlines for useless goals, put out by unreasonable managers - are a far too common situation. People in such circumstances do still have some choices they can make.
Many small exercises can provide stress relief at work, but they are not a cure. There are several documented side effects of stress that include shallow breathing, muscle tension and a weakened immune system. Direct action can be taken to overcome these.
First, take several slow, deep breaths. To relieve the tension around the body, you need to expand your chest (but you don't have to go full-blown Zen). Move and stretch your shoulders and arms. Move your head slowly left, then right. Now flex your calves. Stress relief at work can be done at your desk.
Don't forget to exercise your mind, too. People lose focus and cannot concentrate effectively if they are dealing with stress. It damages the ability to remember items, as irritation causes focus on one's anger instead of the problem at hand.
When you are deeply breathing, close your eyes and clear your mind for a few minutes. You just need a moment to mentally step away from your problems. You must not use this moment to focus on your stress or anger. Try to focus on something that brings happiness to you: the face of a child, the family dog, a great hole-in-one, or anything that works for you.
Stress relief at work is solved by identifying the symptoms of the stress. Spend some time understanding the symptoms that cause the stress. Once you've examined the symptoms, start to attack the main cause of the problem.
Many people decide to become entrepreneurs by starting their own company. A different group of challenges ensue, but best of all is that you are free to take them on. You will often work very long hours for middling pay and no acknowledgment of your efforts. One of the most frequently cited major incentives for those who keep trying is the feeling of being the 'commander of your own ship', even in the absence of other large internal and external rewards.
Others will stay within the organization and try to effect change. Even if they do not succeed completely, avoiding simply "giving up" may be a source of satisfaction.
You may be able to transfer away from the unreasonable boss or simply wait for him to move to another position. Fortunately, most companies are very dynamic; very little remains the same over a six month to a one year period. This is both good and bad for stress relief at work.
Until better things come, focus more on the end goal than on the intermediate process. Keep in mind that not all events are within your control; some are beyond your ability to change. Keep in mind that the latter is not important. Try to deal with reasonable people in the company when possible; avoid contact with the unreasonable people.
Don't hesitate to vent to friends and family away from work. During the working day, you should concentrate on your professional responsibilities.
