Stress in the Workplace
Sadly, one of the main origins of anxiety is stress in the workplace. It can be hard to get your idea job for any number of reasons so you can easily become stuck in something less that desirable; retail, a dull desk job, never-ending angry phone calls of customer service. Even people who have so-called “glamorous” jobs that earn them tens of thousands of dollars each year can have immense amounts of stress.
Stress can be the result of poor relations among co-workers, making your workplace awkward if not downright uncomfortable. It can be even worse when you have problems with your boss because this may lead to excessive chastising, heaping too much work upon just you, constant worry about the loss of your job, or just unfair treatment all around. Having to go to a job with an unpleasant atmosphere every day brings you down and can stress you out. Stress in the workplace can lead into a feeling of hopelessness of “I’ll never get out of this job” or the more typical unhappiness, “I hate my job.”
Dealing with the public (should your job include doing so), can also be very stressful. People are unpredictable, so you never know when you are going to talk with someone pleasant, someone grouchy, or someone who is just plain mean. The customer comes first in nearly all businesses, which can be particularly grating when someone is acting like a complete jerk.
Projects and tasks that are large or appear difficult can quickly become stressors also. When you find yourself in an overwhelming situation, you can begin to feel powerless and lost. You might start to panic and wonder how you will ever get this job done.
It may be easy to say if you don’t like your job, quit. In some cases, this is the only way for you to find a better, less stressful job. In others, you may have to find a way to ease your stress until you can find a job better suited for you.
