Stress from a New Baby

Stress from a new baby can take away a lot of the excitement of having a new child. Being a new parent can be both exciting and stressful all at once. You finally have the child you’ve wanted, but suddenly you are hit with the amount of responsibility it takes to raise a child – not to mention the worry you may have when it comes to your baby’s future.

Stop – try not to get ahead of yourself. Learning to manage a baby at one point in time is all the potential stress you need, so immediately ditch those concerns of the future. The future is just that; ahead of you and unreachable at the moment, so logically, what good does it do you to panic over college funding? None. Rejoice in the fact that you have a new baby and deal with the stress that entails as it comes.

Stress from a new baby can be caused by exhaustion. Make sure to get some sleep. This can seem a bit impossible if you have a baby that is constantly fussing, so when your baby has finally relaxed, that’s precisely when you should as well. Unless doing the dishes during his nap is inescapably necessary, go take a nap yourself. If you haven’t had time to give your body rest from sleep, you are going to exacerbate your stress. At the very least, close your eyes and focus on breathing deeply to calm your body.

Eat well; trying to get a quick energy fix by wolfing down a candy bar is going to cause you to crash later instead of keep you peppy and ready for the day. Exercise when you can (not when you’re tired and need a nap, if that’s the case then nap) in order to keep your body healthy as well as feeling good. Just a walk will do.

Do what you can to make time for your partner. If necessary, get extra help, either from friends and family or through a trusted babysitter. Having extra help when you aren’t focusing on couple time can do wonders to ease your stress.
