Stress from Lack of Sleep

Stress from lack of sleep can start you in a negative cycle. Stress and sleep are related in a similar way that stress and illness are related. Dealing with excess stress can lead to problems sleeping, and likewise problems sleeping can lead to stress. The key in either situation is to learn to relax or find methods that can help you get yourself some shuteye.

You may have many reasons why you don’t get enough sleep. Some people can be so busy they do not have enough time to get the eight hours that is said to be the best amount of sleep time. You might also have some sort of disorder such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, or sleep apnea. Feeling like you have less energy during the day, feeling tired, and having problems functioning can mean you are not receiving an adequate amount of sleep. This stress from lack of sleep can lead to anger, depression, problems with your memory which can lead to difficulties in school or at jobs which can be stressful in themselves, and because both stress and lack of sleep can lower your immune system, you should seek help to get more sleep.

Therapy and medicine may be what you need for some sleep disorders that will not go away without extra help. For others, learning to calm themselves at the end of a long day can help with easing into sleep. Setting aside a time before you go to bed that allows you to unwind can make it easier to fall asleep when the time comes. Meditation, using imagery to imagine you are somewhere relaxing and pleasing like the beach (you can also purchase sounds to add to the ambiance), do a crossword puzzle, read a book, or take a warm bath or shower. You can also see about fitting in some healthy exercise earlier in the day. Exercise (not right before bed time!) can do wonders in helping you sleep and will also help boost your health.
