Stress from Crime

Stress from crime can be a major cause of anxiety and even depression if it long term, especially if it is a serious crime against you or a loved one. Small crimes such as theft and vandalism are going to be stressful; you will have to deal with insurance, coping with lost items that may have been very previous to you, or the destruction of property special or important to you. You can worry about the incident possibly happening again and it can take some time for those worries to be assuaged.

Other crimes are much worse and leave a much stronger lasting impact upon a person. Murder, rape, and other heinous crimes can have powerful consequences that can take many years for the person to get over. Such strong stressful events can lead to acute stress disorder, an anxiety filled time recently after the crime that can lead to difficulty sleeping and endless worrying. Therapy is the best medicine, finding someone to trust and confide in. Without extra help, people can often develop post-traumatic stress disorder that can take years to free the person from, and sometimes doing so is not always possible. There are times when the impression is so dominant it can affect the person for the rest of his or her life. Victims of abuse tend to have problems in the future, and a rape victim may never fully recover.

Should you find yourself a victim of a crime, don’t hesitate to call the police and get help. In times of high stress from crime and the development of acute stress disorder, therapy has been known to stave off the advance into post-traumatic stress disorder. Even if you can never quite recover from a particular crime, there are was you can learn to deal with the problems that arise and avoid letting your stress control your life.
