Stress and Smoking
If you are suffering from stress and smoking is a potential relief for this, perhaps think twice. People who smoke tend to use cigarettes as a form of stress control. If they feel concerned or stressed out, they can light up, take a long breath, and feel better. However, relying on smoking to get you through a stressful time is not only unhealthy, it is not exactly doing what you think it is.
Smokers tend to have slightly elevated stress levels when compared to other people. Smoking is already addictive, and turning it into a stress reliever makes you even more dependent on it. It can become a situation in which if you do not have a cigarette on hand, you become even more stressed than you were before. Because stress can lead to physical problems, smoking will not aid them, but instead exacerbate them.
Your best choice is to stop smoking altogether, but if you find you are unable or unwilling to do so, that is your choice. However, at the very least you should find some other method of stress relief instead of leaning so heavily upon the feeling that smoking reduces your stress. Replace that it with another stress reducing activity. You are sure to find something you enjoy that helps take your mind off stress and possibly even increase your health. Meditation, sports, exercising, and eating right are all good ways of not only helping your body to be healthier, but also ways of boosting your energy, something smoking can’t quite give you. You may feel that smoking mellows you out, but wouldn’t you rather feel relaxed, healthy, and happy? Different stress relievers can offer you much more than an expensive cigarette.
Choosing a method of stress relief that gives you more benefits than stress and smoking is well worth the change. By ridding yourself of your smoking habit, you may find yourself feeling much better in many ways and overall, stressed less.
