Stress and Overeating
People have a number of ways of coping with stress and overeating is one of these. Sometimes people use food as a means to help ease their stressing. The problem with this decision is that it can lead to always eating when you are stressed, and not necessarily good food. If people are going to eat to ease stress, then they are going to eat food that tastes delicious; sugary foods, nachos and cheese, pizza, and plenty of other foods that are full of calories and unhealthy ingredients. In this case, you will only worsen your stress because instead of just easing it, you are increasing your weight, which is unhealthy if you don’t eat very many healthy foods or exercise.
Overeating can become dangerous if you do it every time you stress out. A cupcake here, a pint of ice cream there, it can quickly add up if there is nothing done to counteract your food intake. Making matters worse is the stress hormone cortisol, which has been linked to weight gain. This means that not only are you eating too much, but you are burning off less calories than you normally would if you were not stressing out. You may find that overeating can become a constant habit even when you are barely stressed, which means it is a bigger problem than you might think.
In order to counter overeating, you need to find alternate methods of stress reduction. Eating a slice of cake is tasty, but there are other ways of relaxing your mind and body without adding on extra pounds. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself once and a while, just as long as you make sure to eat well and exercise, both of which can help add to feeling good and reducing both stress and overeating. If you find your overeating has become a major issue, then you should seek outside help.
