Stress and Low Self-Esteem

Our confidence can be affected by stress and low self-esteem can result. Stress takes a toll on you, mentally and physically. Each day you want to achieve a stress-free life, something that is extremely hard to do. Especially when you have bills to pay, a job you may not like, and a million little things that never seem to get done (and it’s always a million too, isn’t it? Never just three or five like it really is). Stress will not only leave you with a headache, an irritated feeling, and several other problems, but it can also leave you with low self-esteem.

Constant negative thoughts are common when you stress out. Terms like “I can’t” or “I’m afraid” or “What if something bad happens” or “This is too hard” tend to come into play. Stress brings out the negative aspects of whatever you are facing. If it is a big job project, you may start to panic and not believe you can get it done or get it done on time. For children, stress and low self-esteem can be destructive. They may look at a page of math problems that are difficult and stress so much they give up, throw away their pencil and say “I’m too stupid for this stuff anyway.” Of course, much of the time we know this is not true in our subconscious; we are just letting the stress of the moment get to us. One child may find herself struggling with a problem, stressing out and becoming angry, frustrated, and think she just isn’t good enough to be able to solve it. Then her dog comes up to her, looking excited and happy, and the child has a moment of stress-free clarity while petting the dog. She feels better, takes a deep breath, and tries the problem again, this time with success. Breaking out of the stress of the moment can be the key to kicking low self-esteem to the curb.
