Stress and Irritability

There are many side effects of stress and irritability is one of these. When a person is stressed, they can become uncomfortable, both in a mental state as well as physically. Their mind can start worrying over more and more things while their body reacts through headaches, muscle pains, high blood pressure, and more. When people are uncomfortable, they can easily become cranky. Frustration with the problem behind the stress and the way they feel is often why irritability goes hand in hand with stress.

Growing irritable is a sign that you are stressed even if you do not want to admit it right away. When you are irritable, you may find yourself snapping at people, feeling grumpy, and easily rubbed the wrong way when someone talks to you. Just like any other stress sign, it can have a negative effect in that it creates more stress when it happens to you. So when you snap at someone who does not deserve it, you feel bad and stress more, wishing you hadn’t said anything and berating yourself over it.

Stress can also cause symptoms that will in turn create irritability. Poor sleeping habits, depression, anger, muscle pain, headaches, and other signs. It can be hard to rid yourself of that irritable feeling when everything around you seems to annoy you and your main stressor will not go away. During those times you need to find some way of stepping out of the situation. If you are at work, ask your boss for a break. If you are at home, step outside and watch the trees or clouds. A child at school and utilize lunchtime to socialize or recess to exercise out their pent up energy and aggravations. Freeing yourself from stress and irritability can help ease your stress, and then taking time to ease your stress can put you back into a calmed state of mind and body.
