Stress and Insomnia

There are many side effects from stress and insomnia is quite a common one. What’s more, like many other signs of stress, it can become a vicious circle for you to deal with. When you stress, you can get yourself so worked up and so worried you find that you are unable to sleep. On the same page, when you suffer from a lack of sleep, you can feel irritated and become even more stressed. Both these situations will pile up on each other and then you have a huge, stressed, sleepless problem.

Your body can be put in such a state when you stress that you are simply too excited and have too many thoughts in your head to be able to relax and sleep. The fight or flight response will be accompanied by adrenaline and other hormones that are not meant for you to deal with when you try to sleep. When you do not get enough sleep, you are tired, irritated, can become angry, and the way you feel and may act towards others can become stressors in themselves.

Learning to calm yourself before you go to sleep is exactly what you need. Taking a few moments to focus on meditation can be a huge help. By sitting or lying down, you can get your body into a relaxing position, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Focusing on your breathing is soothing and will remove your mind from what is stressing you. You can also choose a relaxing activity, such as reading or even watching a funny or happy movie. If you want to avoid stress and insomnia, you want your body to feel good and at ease before you sleep, and you need your mind to be in the same place, otherwise if you think of your stressors, you will only work your body back into a stressed state again.
