Stress Relaxation Techniques
Stress relaxation techniques are practical methods of dealing with stress on your own. Not everyone has the extra money to talk to a therapist or get professional help. By learning some stress relaxation techniques or other things you can do to help ease yourself from stressors, you may be able to effectively reduce or remove stress, and at the very least, help yourself to feel better. Some techniques work better than others, so you can find what works best for you and use it on a regular basis.
Meditation is a well-known stress relaxation technique. By sitting or lying in a comfortable position, breathing deeply, and focusing all your attention to your breathing, you can empty your mind to everything else. When you inhale you can choose a specific calming word to say, such as “peace” and when you exhale, choose another word such as “calm.” Taking time to meditate will relax both your body and mind, extinguishing that fight or flight desire and lessening its potential negative effects on your body. You can also meditate but try different systems of relaxing while doing so. Some people may wish to imagine themselves as a large oak tree, solid roots grounding them and the sense of being the tree offering confidence, strength, and security.
Yoga and Tai Chi are other methods of helping relax during stressful times. If sitting or lying down for meditation is not for you, perhaps actively moving will be better. The movements are not fast; they are slow, focused, and need your concentration. Your stress can melt away as you perform the movements, which can be more effective when you are outside in pleasant weather.
You may also want to try getting a massage in order to have more relaxed muscles (and a massage can feel fantastic) or when all else fails, see to it that you give yourself a vacation. Time away in a relaxed place can help you gather your thoughts and settle down.
