Psychological Stress
Psychological stress is common in today's fast-paced world. Just-in-time manufacturing, news reports from all over the globe, instant communications, and other modern technology have aided mankind greatly. But along with these luxuries comes faster deadlines, quick notification of bad news, and more incoming information to have to make sense of.
But most would rather the world continue at its frenzied pace. However, it's also good to keep in mind that more technology means more choices. We can control the basis of our psychological stress by using the internal and external means available to us to deal with that stress.
Some people are unfortunate and have a supervisor who gives his workers unreasonable deadlines to accomplish trivial tasks. These days, telecommuting, working flexible hours, and taking extended leave for pregnancy and family situations are options many people now have.
While contemporary society may pose many challenges, there are also many new technologies to help cope with them. Computer technology not only makes it possible to get more done, but also with much less effort. They allow us contact with people with similar interests anywhere in the world. That would have been impossible or impractical decades ago, aside from the occasional convention far from home.
Psychology, although still a new science, is beginning to compile good data on the many contributing factors of psychological stress. Although progress is being made, the bewildering array of studies make transforming this data into useful treatments a difficult task.
The science explaining the effects of sports and diet has greatly improved in recent decades. Exercise and good nutrition are now regarded as a potent psychological stress-fighting combination.
While millions of people are still very hard-working, most spend less of their income than in the past on basics like housing, food, transportation and medical treatment. Many two-driver families often have extra vehicles.
Many potential causes of psychological stress are all around us. The nightly news gives us 30 minutes of doom and gloom each evening. But we manage to continue on. There is more to most people than can be seen on TV.
Difficult problems are, by definition, usually not simple. But there's actually no necessity for problems to induce psychological stress. This results from the thinking that the chasm between the "I must" thoughts and the "I can't" thoughts is unable to be traversed. But now, there are many effective ways to rid yourself of these self-defeating thoughts and overcome the stranglehold stress may have on you. It's takes effort, but it can certainly be done.
