Occupational Stress

Much of the stress we experience in our daily lives comes from occupational stress. The stressors dealt with can range anywhere from co-workers to the job itself. High levels of occupational stress can have negative health affects just as many other types of stress are able to incur. The problems you experience can include physical problems such as headaches, muscle pain, high blood pressure, and possible cardiovascular issues, as well as mental problems like anxiety and depression.

The way to free yourself from occupational stress is all about change. The most aggressive change you can make is to switch jobs completely, but before you put yourself through more stress in finding a new job, let’s focus on possible ways to made adjustments in your current job. By identifying major changes your company might be able to make for the benefit of everyone along with changes that can be made on a more individual level, you can start offering these ideas to your manager, or if you feel uncomfortable talking to your manage, your company may have a method you can use to contact them and suggest changes. Items such as organized, healthy work schedules may do wonders, as well as improved working conditions.

On more individual levels, you may be able to request more training, job rotation, reducing overtime, and if you have management or other high-level authority over a number of employees, you may be able to figure out ways of offering healthier foods and exercise, both of which can help reduce stress and improve health overall.

Whatever your occupational stress is, you should do what you can to take a step back and examine the causes and possible solutions. You can even enlist the help of other co-workers. There is no reason why you should have to work in a stressful environment, so try pushing for change which may turn out to be for everyone’s benefit.
