Emotional Stress

Emotional stress is a large part of our lives; much more than it used to be in the past. When faced with an emotionally trying situation, it can be hard to recover afterward. We cannot fight emotional stress, nor can we truly run from it. Instead we must learn to deal with it effectively or suffer the consequences the excessive stress can bring us.

This stress tends to be unavoidable. You cannot stop someone you love from dying, nor can you stop all other major life changes. Your girlfriend/boyfriend may have just broken up with you, but it does not have to run your life. Your job does not make you who you are. It might be a part of your life, but you did have a life before that job as well. Emotional stress is strong and difficult to handle, especially when the stressor is quite strong. It can begin to take a toll on your health just as any other form of stress would, which can lead to more severe illnesses, and in some cases life threatening.

If stress from emotions becomes too much for one person, it can drive them to self-destructive behavior. In their attempts to escape the stress, people can become dependent upon drugs, alcohol, it can lead to cutting, and in extreme cases, attempts at suicide. If you find that you have one of these problems, it may easily be because of emotional stress. In any case, you should seek out help. Sometimes finding stress relieving methods may not be enough; a little yoga cannot always help someone through the death of a parent, even if yoga was an effective stress reducer before. It may take therapy with someone more experienced in stress removal. As long as you can find help, you should be able to ease the stress in your life, but you have to be willing to make change as well.
