ESFJ Under Stress

ESFJ (Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging) personality types, or sometimes known as caregivers, are people who love people. They want to be liked and enjoy others, always hoping to make someone feel good about him or herself. Stability is important to them, as is responsibility. They are quite dependable, with the predisposition of finishing something they start, and will help those already working on that particular project.

However, because they yearn to control their environment and at the same time keep others happy, sometimes conflict can appear. If they are set in one way and it will be necessary to switch to a different, unknown method, they can become uncomfortable or possibly agree to new rules without fully understanding what the consequences of doing so may mean. At times, they can feel underappreciated or neglected because of all their attempts to please with nothing to show for it. In certain cases of guilty feelings, they can feel ashamed and withhold this information from others, which can also mean they are in emotional denial.

ESFJs can eventually become dejected and gloomy over unresolved stressful events. They may feel that what has transpired if their fault and can believe in their guilt and live in a past of “what ifs.” At some point, the they may finally complain or become depressed. If they cannot act on their desire to tend to others they can feel further inadequate as well as forgotten. Long-term stress can wreak havoc on an their emotional feelings and overall confidence.

If an ESFJ is able to fulfill what they may deem their function, such as being a counselor, nurse, or even feeling secure under the rules of a bookkeeper and administrative assistant, they will have less stress within their life, provided their family and friends outside of their work life also offer the sort of environment they thrives on.
